What are indigenous plants?
Indigenous plants are the native plants which naturally occur in the local area. They enhance the character of our landscape, provide low maintenance gardens and maintain our local biodiversity by providing food, nesting sites and shelter for native wildlife.

Local Flora
The native vegetation of Knox is dominated by tall eucalypt forests and scrub bushland. Local forest areas are characterised by an open canopy with dense understorey. Eucalypts found in Knox include Swamp Gum, Manna Gum, Stringybark, Box Gum and Messmate Stringybark.

Plant communities in Knox tend to become more lush and denser in undergrowth towards the Dandenong Ranges. A contributing factor to this variation is the increase in moisture availability.

A comprehensive listing of the indigenous plants occurring in the City of Knox is located at the bottom of this screen.

Gardening with indigenous plants in Knox
A selection of preferred indigenous species suitable for planting within residential areas in Knox is provided in the "Gardening with Indigenous Plants in Knox" available at the bottom of this screen.

This brochure also provides things to consider when gardening and a list of nurseries selling indigenous plants.

Gardens for Wildlife (G4W)
The Gardens for Wildlife (G4W) program is in partnership with the Knox Environment Society (KES) and is designed to encourage you, the owner or occupier of a suburban block, to set aside an area in your garden for local wildlife. This can be done by providing habitat planted with locally indigenous, Australian native or suitable exotic species.

The program is free to join and once you have registered, an assessor will visit to provide advice and answer any questions you may have about the type of wildlife you would like to attract. After the visit you will receive a 'report pack' containing a written assessment, a Certificate of Achievement, a Gardens for Wildlife booklet, a letterbox plaque to help promote the program and further garden and wildlife information.

For further information or to register, visit www.knox.vic.gov.au/g4w.
