KinderGardens for Wildlife  Printer Friendly
Kindergardens for Wildlife is a pilot initiative introduced to extend the well established ‘Gardens for Wildlife’ program beyond residential back yards into early childhood playgrounds.

The children and community you work with could help save local plants and animals from the danger of extinction. For example, children in your early childhood setting could help protect our Knox Sword Grass Butterfly. Or they could help a platypus to thrive in Rowville. Even Powerful Owls could be protected by the efforts of your children.

It’s all aimed at encouraging children’s understanding and awareness of the importance of a child’s local environment.
Kindergarden
Research acknowledges that children are less frequently engaged in natural environments, and may therefore have a diminished ‘connection’ with nature. The DHS Outdoor Play Guide (2007) suggests that many children may not have any other access to natural spaces other than at early childhood services. Kindergardens for Wildlife philosophies and practices will assist in reversing this current childhood trend.

Council plans to encourage the early childhood sector within our Local Government area to implement this program as a daily part of their curriculum by providing resources, programming information and comprehensive ‘hands-on’ kits for experiential learning with children.

How to register
If you would like to participate in the KinderGardens for Wildlife Program, please complete the online registration form.

Please Note: This program is only open to early childhood services in the City of Knox, Victoria.

KinderGardens for Wildlife Milestones
The KinderGardens for Wildlife program is made up of six complimentary ‘milestones’ which provide habitat characteristics for local flora and fauna. Each individual milestone can be achieved in any order the participating Preschool choose, and needs to be assessed by the KinderGardens for Wildlife assessment team. On achieving each milestone, the Preschool will be awarded with a Children’s Resource Kit, Certificate and Milestone Symbol for the playground.

Learn more about each Milestone or to apply for a Milestone, please click on this link to complete the Milestone Registration Form.
