| Over the course of the two weeks, two Melbourne based choreographers, Gerard Van Dyck and Shannon Bott, under the guidance of dance mentor Kate Sulan, taught dance workshops to a group of performers with and without disabilities. At the end of the two weeks Gerard and Shannon had assisted the group to create a 30 minute dance performance that was presented to a packed audience at the Knox Community Arts Centre.
The artists and the performers involved in the project invested an incredible amount of time and energy into the Dance off the Rails project. Each individual brought important creative skills and focus to the development of the performance. The eclectic personalities lead to a colourful, fun, and at times challenging dance making experience for everyone involved.
Underlying the Dance off the Rails project was the philosophy that people of all abilities and backgrounds should have access to professional and meaningful creative arts experiences.
In the words of Gerard and Shannon: “We have had a zip-boing-pow-freak-out kind of a time. You’re all awesome!”
