Cycling

There are more than 100km of shared paths throughout the City of Knox that connect with major parks, reserves, schools and shopping precincts.

Whether you are riding for sport, recreation or just 'to get around', cycling is a fast and efficient mode of transport. Cycling will save you money, help the environment and improve your fitness. It is also much less stressful than sitting in a car! Knox Already has a significant bicycle network, predominantly catering for recreational users. The challenge now is to develop a combination of appropriate off-road and on-road networks to ensure cycling becomes a realistic travel choice for all residents and visitors to Knox.

The current Knox Cycling Brochure, including a map of the Knox Bike Network, is available electronically by click on the link at the bottom of this page. Copies of this bike maps are available from Council's Customer Service Centres.

Please remember when riding on shared paths that these are shared spaces with pedestrians. Cyclists should obey the road rules and reduce speed, give way to pedestrians and be courteous. Cyclists should also alert pedestrians of their presence by using their bell.

Join our two instructors, learn about safety checks, bike handling and practical traffic riding skills such as correct road positioning. Touring Knox by Bicycle

The Knox Cycleway will take you to local parks, reserves, leisure centres, historic homesteads, shopping centres, waterways and much more. It is a great way to see the City. There are many excellent locations along the cycleway for picnics, as well as scenic spots where you can sit and take in the view.

Building of the cycleway began in 1977, and it was always envisaged that a comprehensive network of off-road bike paths would traverse the municipality. Today, there are seven bridges and 19 underpasses along the cycleway, providing a safe recreational environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Knox Cycleway also connects with the bicycle networks of neighbouring municipalities. So, if you feel adventurous and fit, you can cycle towards Melbourne's CBD up into the Dandenong Ranges or down to Port Phillip Bay.

It is important to note that the Knox Cycleway is a shared use facility and that users are courteous and respectful of each other to ensure maximum enjoyment for everyone. Pedestrians and cyclists are permitted to use the cycleway, and cyclists should give way to pedestrians.

Bike Parking

There are over 90 bike parking locations around the municipality, shown on Council's interactive Google based bike parking map.

Bike parking at railway stations and public transport hubs is provided using Parkiteer. This service is free and secure. However, you must pre register prior to your trip.

Railtrails are multipurpose public paths created from abandoned railway corridors. With gentle gradients and minimal road intersections, the trails provide safe and scenic cycling routes.
