Knox Local Australia Day Awards 2019

The Knox Local Australia Day Awards are a great opportunity for you to recognise a friend, family member, community leader or colleague who has made a beneficial contribution to the Knox community. Nominations will be open in the following categories:

  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Elder Citizen of the Year
  • Local Hero
  • Environmentalist of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Citizen of the Year

Award recipients will be announced at our Australia Day Breakfast and flag raising ceremony held on 26 January 2019 at the Knox Civic Centre.

Nominations are now open and close on Wednesday 28 November 2018.

How do I nominate someone for these awards?

To nominate someone you know for their contribution to our community, simply complete a nomination form and return to Council.

How to compile your nomination


Read on for further information about each of the categories, eligibility and selection criteria.

  • Submissions should be typed and around 500 words; maximum 1000 words.
  • Explain relevant achievements, background and reasons for your nomination.
  • Enclose clear copies of any newspaper or magazine articles about the nominee and relevant achievements.
  • List any other awards.
  • Include any other relevant information.

Conditions of entry

  • The name of at least one referee must be supplied.
  • The decision of the Knox City Council Local Australia Day Awards Committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into in regard to that decision.
  • Entries must be received by Wednesday 28 November 2018 and submitted online, or on the prescribed entry form.

Young Citizen of the Year

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for the Australia Day Local Awards, people must be Australian
citizens, live in the municipality of Knox and participate in activities that impact on Knox. The
Australia Day Local Awards are designed to honour young local citizens who have made an
outstanding contribution to their community or school.

Please Note: Nominees for Young Citizen of the Year must be under 25 years of age on 26 January 2019
to be eligible.

Attributes of the Young Citizen of the Year may include:

  • Participation in community activities;
  • Concern for the environment;
  • Awareness and/or involvement in youth issues;
  • Commitment to civic responsibility;
  • Ability to balance personal life and community commitments;
  • Care and compassion towards others;
  • Acceptance of responsibility for self and others;
  • Ability to be visionary; and
  • Achievements (areas of achievement may include school, sport, cultural activities, environmental or community groups).



 

Elder Citizen of the Year

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for the Australia Day Local Awards, people must be Australian citizens,
live in the municipality of Knox and participate in activities that impact on Knox. The Australia Day
Local Awards are designed to honour local citizens aged 65 and over who have made a significant
contribution to the community or are an inspirational role model.

Please Note: Nominees for Elder Citizen of the Year must be a Knox resident aged 65 and over on
26 January 2019 to be eligible.

Attributes of the Elder Citizen of the Year may include:

  • Keenness to contribute to the betterment of the community;
  • Preparedness to embrace and work with diverse cultures;
  • Commitment to civic responsibility;
  • Capacity to develop and implement visionary goals;
  • Ability to show leadership;
  • Ability to balance personal life and community commitments;
  • Ability to be a role model for others;
  • Knowledge of local, national and international issues;
  • Commitment to activities that have short and long term benefits for others; and
  • Concern for the environment.



 

Local Hero

What is a Local Hero?

The intent of this award is to recognise people who have made a specific single contribution,
or who have performed an heroic deed, which may not fit the eligibility of the other Local Australia/
Day Awards.



 

Environmentalist of the Year

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for the Australia Day Local Awards, people must be Australian citizens,
live in the municipality of Knox and participate in activities that impact on Knox. The Australia Day
Local Awards are designed to honour local citizens who have shown a clear commitment to our
national identity and a keenness to contribute to the betterment of the community.

What is an Environmentalist of the Year?

The intent of this award is to recognise people whose actions and ideas have had a significant
positive impact on the natural environment (flora and fauna) which may not fit the eligibility of
the other Local Australia Day Awards.



 

Volunteer of the Year

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for the Australia Day Local Awards, people must be Australian
citizens, live in the municipality of Knox and participate in activities that impact on Knox. The
Australia Day Local Awards are designed to honour local citizens who have given of themselves
in a voluntary role.

Attributes of the Volunteer of the Year may include:

  • Voluntary contribution to the community;
  • Concern for the environment;
  • Willingness to make sacrifices;
  • Enthusiasm to be involved in causes;
  • Preparedness to embrace and work with diverse cultures;
  • Commitment to civic responsibility;
  • Ability to balance personal life and community commitments;
  • Willingness to be involved in helping others; and
  • Care and compassion towards others.



 

Citizen of the Year

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for the Australia Day Local Awards, people must be Australian
citizens, live in the municipality of Knox and participate in activities that impact on Knox. The
Australia Day Local Awards are designed to honour local citizens who could be described as role
models in the community, who have given selflessly of themselves to others.

Attributes of the Citizen of the Year may include:

  • Keenness to contribute to the betterment of the community;
  • Preparedness to embrace and work with diverse cultures;
  • Commitment to civic responsibility;
  • Capacity to develop and implement visionary goals;
  • Ability to show leadership;
  • Ability to balance personal life and community commitments;
  • Ability to be a role model for others;
  • Knowledge of local, national and international issues;
  • Commitment to activities that have short and long term benefits for others; and
  • Concern for the environment.
