Emergency updates from Council

Knox City Council always tries to share information in an emergency as quickly as possible.

Online tools are often the quickest way, and we post emergency information and warnings on:

We also use these tools to keep you updated on:

  • road closures
  • public transport delays
  • other news and events.

We also use traditional forms of communication. Phone calls to our Customer Service team or After Hours numbers.

Announcements on ABC Melbourne Radio 774 are also important connection points.

We make sure journalists and media organisations are well informed.

We're also keen to hear from you about the best ways to connect with you during a local emergency.

CFA – Community Alert Sirens

Community alert sirens are used as part of Victoria’s warning system for all hazards, including:

  • flood
  • fire
  • storm.

Community alert sirens are only used when there is imminent threat to the community.

Short Siren (up to 90 seconds) – indicates a CFA Brigade has responded to an emergency incident nearby. Stay informed.

Extended Siren (5 minutes) – indicates that a current emergency has been identified in your local area and you should seek further information immediately. The emergency incident will impact people in this area.

Sirens are not stand alone means of warning the community and do not replace the need for you to monitor the conditions around you, particularly on hot, dry, windy days. A number of factors will limit who will hear the siren including adverse weather conditions, so you may not hear the siren.

Not all communities have a community alert siren. See a list of Community Alerting Sirens that are currently active across the state.

Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS)

The Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS) is a warning signal used to alert you that an official emergency announcement is to be made.

These concern an actual or impending emergency like:

  • major fires
  • major floods
  • major severe storms and their associated storm surges
  • earthquakes
  • chemical hazards and any associated major pollution, or
  • any other significant emergency.

If you hear a SEWS broadcast

You must:

  • stop what you are doing
  • listen carefully to the information provided, and
  • act as directed.

While we aim to give you up-to-date information in the event of an emergency, always check the emergency service agency responsible for that emergency.

For example, look to the SES for Floods or the CFA for Fires.
