Flood Management Workshop: Weather the Storm

On Wednesday 6 June 2012 Knox City Council hosted the Flood Management Workshop, Weather the Storm. The event was a huge success, attracting approximately 100 Council staff from engineering, planning and risk management directorates from 27 Victorian Councils.

Expert insights were provided by council, academic and professional perspectives.

Dr Ian Bell, the Director - Engineering and Infrastructure at Knox City Council, gave a perspective through Council’s eyes.

Dr Harvey Stern, the Manager of Climate Services Centre in the Victorian Region from the Bureau of Meteorology, offered expert insight into what we’re facing in relation to recent flooding events and the link to climate change.

Rohan Bennett, a Partner from DLA Piper, advised on third party liabilities relating to flash flooding and what councils' policies cover.

Phillip Neville, the Manager - Floodplain Services, Waterways Melbourne Water, explained Melbourne Water’s Flood Risk Assessment Framework.

Rory O’Connor, a Senior Associate of Norton Rose, gave expert advice on councils' rights and responsibilities according to the Water Act.

The event was enthusiastically received, closing with a workshop allowing participants to question the experts and share their views on flash flooding issues faced by Council.
