Record crowds at Carols

Record crowds enjoyed a wonderful evening of free entertainment and fun family activities at Carols by Candlelight on the first day of Summer at Wally Tew Reserve.

Around 17,000 people came out to celebrate the spirit of Christmas and enjoy community life at its best, enjoying the many market stalls, delicious food, arts and crafts and of course some of the best live entertainment Knox has to offer.

Headline act, The Voice finalist Karen Lee Andrews (aka Ms Murphy) was accompanied by uplifting gospel choir Urban Praise together with one of Australia’s most prominent and respected military bands, The Royal Australian Navy Band.

They were joined on stage by local choir The Chime Choir, and Dance Fusion, a collaboration of local dance schools in Knox, as well as the super Christmas troupe from Bethany Fisher Productions.

The Grand Final performances of Knox’s biggest song contest, the Knox Factor, was a huge hit with the crowd, with the finalists in three categories entertaining the thousands that came out to see them perform. The final winner was Knox local singer Renee Taggart who sang an original song.

The category winners and finalists were:

Ages 5-11 years:
1st place – Holly Macallan
2nd place – Daniella Nikalaou
3rd place – Summer Bush

Ages 12-15 years:
1st Place – Lynn Ng
2nd Place – Victoria Nikalaou
3rd Place – Celine Robinson

Ages 15-25 years:
Knox Factor winner 1st Place – Renee Taggart (sang an original song)
2nd Place – Tilly Ruddick
3rd Place – Phoebe Bengough

A variety of free children’s activities delighted the kids, including the inflatable fun zone, with arts and crafts and a special Christmas market all enjoyed by the huge crowds.

The many little ones who had stayed awake to see Santa and his friendly Elf were not disappointed either! The warm Summer weather provided the perfect setting for the spectacular fireworks finale bringing this wonderful evening to a close.

Council would like to thank everyone involved in this year’s Carols, with a special thank you to the many talented local performers, nationally acclaimed artists, musicians and dancers, our talented program director, Peter Grant, OAM, as well all the stallholders and many wonderful volunteers who all helped make this year’s Carols a fantastic evening and Council’s most successful to date.
