Media Release - Better access for Boronia seniors with on-demand bus pilot

Boronia seniors and carers will have greater independence and better access to services thanks to a new on-demand bus service being trialled by Knox City Council.

The flexible, accessible and safe transport trial begins this Wednesday 28 August, ferrying passengers to and from their homes to selected activity centres including Boronia station, Knox Private Hospital, Westfield Knox and Angliss Hospital between 9am and 4pm.

The weekly Wednesday service is available for people over 65 and their carers and costs just $3 per ride.

To access the pilot service, users need to register by calling 9298 8000 and answering a few questions to access the service and we can assist with any questions you may have.

Once registered, passengers simply need to call to book a ride before 9am, 11am, 1pm or 3pm. The buses are wheelchair accessible.

Quotes attributable to Mayor, Cr Jake Keogh:

  • We know social isolation can have a devastating effect on our community, particularly the elderly who may be less mobile and find accessing transport services difficult or costly
  • Our seniors often avoid public transport due to accessibility and safety concerns, so an on demand bus service breaks down those barriers
  • Boronia was chosen as the pilot site due to its lower rates of car ownership, particularly among seniors
  • Knox is proud to be supporting increased independence for a section of our community who often struggle to access vital services such as health care and other amenities
