Balustrades

Balustrades form an integral safety feature of any building where landings, balcony’s, stairs or raised floors or surface areas are located. Balustrades provide protection from falling from there raised areas and must conform to or be greater than the minimum standards set out in Part 3.9 of the Building Code of Australia.

  • Minimum height from finished surface level of a landing, path, balcony or the like of 1000mm.
  • Minimum height above the nosing of the stair treads or ramp with a gradient greater than 1.20 of 865mm.
  • The openings in balusters must not permit a 125mm sphere to pass through at any point.
  • Where the landing or floors are more than 4m above the surface beneath element of the balusters between 150mm and 760mm must not facilitate climbing.
