Application Process
Knox City Council has a policy of Selecting for Excellence which means we are committed to ensuring that any selection process is one based on merit, genuine contestability and the objective comparison of all relevant information.

For each position there will be a position description attached which will outline to you what the roles and responsibilities of the position entail. Each advertisement will also have a contact name and number – if you have any questions about the position description or the role in general, which are not covered in the advertisement or the position description, we encourage you to contact the officer listed to discuss.

Within each position description there is a section called “Selection Criteria”. Each applicant is expected to address these selection criteria within their application.

Shortly after the closing date a selection committee will review your application. Knox Council conducts interviews with short-listed candidates. If you are successful in obtaining an interview you will be contacted directly by telephone.

Positions advertised by Council attract a large number of qualified applicants. The process of reviewing applications, creating a short list and interviewing can often take up to four weeks.

Addressing Selection Criteria
Selection criteria is a summary of the skills/qualifications/training/knowledge/attributes required to undertake a role successfully. The selection criteria is used by Council to shortlist applicants, only applicants who can satisfy all/most of the selection criteria will be shortlisted.

What does it mean "Address the Selection Criteria"?
This means to write a short response to each criteria outlined in the position description. This can either be part of your cover letter or as a separate document as part of your application.

Some selection criteria require a brief response such as “applicants must hold a current Victorian drivers license”, this could easily be answered by writing a sentence to confirm the type of Victorian drivers license you have.

Others may require more detailed responses, such as “personal values and behaviours aligned to those of Knox City Council”, this would require you to review the values of Council and write a few paragraphs about how you would demonstrate these values if you got the position you are applying for.

Why do I have to do this, my resume includes all of the information relevant to my application?
We will not necessarily be able to match information in your resume to the criteria, and by addressing each selection criteria you increase your chances of gaining an interview by making it easy for the person doing the shortlisting to review your application against the selection criteria. If an advertisement requests you to address the selection criteria and you do not, your application may not be considered as part of the shortlisting process.
