Knox 2008/2018 Sustainable Environment Strategy  Printer Friendly

The Knox 2008/2018 Sustainable Environment Strategy has been developed by the Knox City Council to guide the Council’s ambition of achieving a sustainable city. The strategy has been built on the review of the Knox 2001/2010 Sustainable City Strategy.

The Knox 2008/2018 Sustainable Environment Strategy is a living document that informs decision-making within Council.

Aim of this Strategy
The Knox 2008/2018 Sustainable Environment Strategy provides a framework for Council and community to move toward sustainability over the next ten years. It provides broad goals across seven themes: areas of environmental importance, critical to the achievement of sustainability in Knox. The goals for the seven themes are:

THEME   GOAL
Biodiversity   To improve biodiversity and health of ecosystems
Water   To create healthy and productive water systems
Community Engagement & Leading by Example   Council to lead an engaged and empowered community
Waste Minimisation   To have less waste and more sustainable lifecycles
Sustainable Planning & Development   To create a liveable city and sustainable development
Integrated Transport   Integrated and sustainable transport systems that provide realistic transport choices
Climate Change Mitigation and Adaption   To have clean air, in a liveable climate

Each Goal will establish a longer term direction for the organisation, with each goal being achieved through a number of approaches. The approaches identified will be measurable and linked to indicators which will enable Council to determine the trend towards achieving the goal. The strategy will be implemented through actions that Council can take in its own right with existing resources and budgets, and what Council can do to advocate and support community involvement in environmental improvement.

This cooperative approach between Council and community has become the hallmark of Council’s approach to environmental planning since the development of the 1994 Knox Local Conservation Strategy.
