| What is the Program?
The Knox Environment Awards are conducted under the auspices of Knox City Council. They provide acknowledgement and recognition for the contributions made by the community in environmental sustainability.
The Knox Environment Awards link community groups, schools, special interest groups and businesses with a focus on building a better community through action and participation. | |
| Award Categories | | Communication Award:
An award for a newsletter, radio program, website, book or other media demonstrating a commitment to education or promotion of environmental sustainability in Knox.
Gardens for Wildlife Award:
Nominations for this Award are entered via the Gardens for Wildlife Program which is designed to encourage residents of Knox to set aside an area of their garden of wildlife. This is done by providing habitat with locally indigenous, native or suitable exotic plants.
An award will be presented to participants who achieve category one or advance a category in the program. This is in recognition of the outstanding commitment to creating high quality habitat on private land.
Heritage Award:
An Award for the preservation, restoration and/or maintenance of the natural, indigenous or cultural heritage of Knox. For example, preserving a building or an area of local significance, maintaining the character of the Knox area or maintaining historical records, artefacts, indigenous language, cultural preservation of traditional lifestyles. Heritage encompasses preserving the past and the present for future generations.
Schools for Sustainability Awards:
Most outstanding Pre School, Primary and/or Secondary School demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability at their school through: • Enhancement of the natural environment within their school grounds (eg: habitat gardens for wildlife; protection of remnant vegetation; revegetation / planting activities on or off their grounds) • Energy or water conservation projects • Incorporation of sustainability or environmental themes in their school charter / curriculum • Developing partnerships in order to promote positive attitudes towards the environment by students and the community (partnerships with Council, other schools, cluster projects, community groups or local businesses)
Schools for Sustainability Teacher Award:
An award for a pre school, primary and/or secondary teacher that demonstrates a commitment to leadership, motivation, innovation and promotion of environmental sustainability.
Greenleaf Business Sustainability Award:
An award for any business that operates in an environmentally responsible manner and/or is implementing an initiative to reduce resource consumption (energy, water, etc); minimises waste, supports local community, supports local economy through purchasing locally, green purchasing, volunteering in local environmental projects, etc. (Please Note: This Award relates to business operations, not products or services).
Greenleaf Community Sustainability Award:
An award for an individual or community group showing outstanding commitment to leadership, motivation or promotion of environmental issues.
Sustainable Development Award:
An award for a completed development that demonstrates and promotes sustainable design principles (over and above required 5 star rating), innovation, accessibility, and respect for neighbourhood character.
Nominations for this Award will be entered via Council’s STEPS and Sustainable Development Scorecard Assessment tools or other accredited assessment tool.
Knox Environment Awards Committee Award:
An award for an organisation, group or individual that the Knox Environment Award Committee believes demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental issues. Top

| How do I nominate for the Awards? | | Nomination forms are available at the bottom of this web page. Simply click on the links below to download the form for the category you wish to nominate for, fill in the form and send, along with any supporting material, to:

Please ensure any supporting documentation and/or photos sent in with your nomination (electronically if possible) are clearly named or labelled.
Nomations close on 31 July 2009. No late submissions will be accepted. Top

 | The previous year’s winning nominated projects / nominees are not eligible for the same Knox Environment Award Category, unless the project is considerably advanced. |  | Nominated projects can be in the implementation stage (excluding the Sustainable Development category) |  | The Knox Environment Award Committee will not enter into discussion either verbally or in writing of any judgement. |  | Council employees are not eligible to participate. |  | The Knox Environment Awards Committee reserves the right not to grant an Award. |  | The 2009 Knox Environment Awards Presentation will be held on Friday 9 October 2009 at the Civic Centre. |
