| The Knox Pedestrian Plan identifies the main characteristics of a walkable environment as:

 | interesting and attractive environments; | | supporting infrastructure e.g. signage and seating; | | continuous links between major destinations; | | overlooked streets from shops and residential properties; | | frequent opportunities to meet, sit and rest; and | | improved safety by lighting and footpath maintenance.

| The Plan examines walking within Knox compared to these characteristics in terms of the municipality's assets and constraints. It also provides a policy framework within which this Plan sits.
Ten target 'hotspot' areas throughout Knox were selected, and specific walking issues and recommendations made for each. Essentially the hotspots incorporate activity centres and other major trip attractors and generators where walking has the greatest potential to be encouraged. It is envisaged that over time this Plan can be broadened to other areas of Knox by utilising the walkability tools and guidelines.
The Knox Pedestrian Plan is broken up into two separate sections. The first being the main document which includes a written summary of the recommendations, while the second is a Workbook which focuses on the ten hotspots and includes maps and photos of specific issues and recommended actions. Unfortunately, due to the size of the Workbook, this is not able to be posted on the web. Copies of this are available on CD upon request.
