Let’s connect the dots: Knox calls for public transport vision for the East

Ahead of November’s State Election, Knox City Council has called on all Victorian political parties to back its vision for a comprehensive and inter-connected public transport system across the eastern metropolitan region.

Council is advocating for the delivery of a next generation public transport system that will connect more people with jobs, educational opportunities, business and health precincts. A more effective system throughout eastern Melbourne will enable the region to become an employer of choice and encourage economic growth.
A 3-staged approach is needed to deliver Knox’s transport vision:

Stage 1
Deliver rail along Wellington Road to Rowville as one integrated project, utilising $475 million in Federal Government funding.

Stage 2
Extend the Knox Tram (light rail) from Vermont South to Upper Ferntree Gully station, via Knox Central.

Stage 3
Deliver light rail along Stud Road connecting Dandenong with the Bayswater Business Precinct. Also deliver light rail along Springvale Road.

Council believes the delivery of all three stages will be pivotal to the future social, economic and environmental development of the Knox community, as well as the wider region.

In conjunction with the Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC), Knox City Council will continue to advocate strongly on its public transport priorities to all political parties ahead of the next State Election.

Quotes attributable to the Mayor, Cr John Mortimore:

  • We believe Knox’s transport vision for the East will connect all the dots and ensure that more people can access the opportunities and services they need within the eastern metropolitan region.
  • Commuters across the east are captive to their cars at present and what we want to see is the delivery of an inter-connected public transport system that will enable people to leave the car at home and still get to their place of work, study or business in a timely way.
  • While Council acknowledges differing proposals at a State and Federal level on how to best achieve this, we must not lose sight of the need for this system to be inter-connected, to maximise the potential benefits to commuters.

Quotes attributable to Cr Peter Lockwood – Council representative to the ETC:

  • The lack of public transport between Knox and Monash in particular, contributes significantly to the rapidly increasing congestion on our freeways and arterial roads.
  • A better and inter-connected system will motivate more people to work or study closer to home, while helping to take cars off the road and deliver more jobs.

Quotes attributable to Cr Jackson Taylor – Collier Ward:

  • Knox has a transport vision for the East, including the extension of the Knox Tram to Upper Ferntree Gully that will, in turn, link more people in with existing heavy rail connections.
  • We are seeing some positive signs at both a State and Federal level, however we need to build on this momentum by continuing to advocate strongly to all sides of politics, ahead of the next State Election, AND TO SAY ‘75, its Time it Arrived.’
