Media Response - Quarry Reserve

Background:

The Knox Leader contacted Council with questions about Quarry Reserve in Ferntree Gully.

Response:

Following the adoption of a New Risk Management Plan, Council is moving towards de-restricting swimming, fishing and non-powered boating at the lake.

Information signage has been installed on-site including the following:

  • Water is unfit for drinking;
  • No lifesavers on patrol; and
  • Deep water.

Additional signage is expected to be installed as part of the management process. Access to parts of the reserve will remain prohibited.

Council can also advise that it is currently preparing a specification and alignment for the new security type fence. Council anticipates the fence to be installed by the end of June 2019, subject to permits.

In addition to the above, Council is also developing a water quality plan, with a strong focus on water quality testing. As water quality in the lake is expected to fluctuate throughout the year, Council urges users to make an informed decision regarding entering the water and to take heed of information provided.
