Media Release - Honouring and welcoming: Australia Day 2019

Australian of the Year 2019 winners

Knox City Council has marked Australia Day 2019 by honouring some of its leading community members, while also welcoming those who have become our newest Australian citizens.

In front of an appreciative crowd at the Civic Centre, recipients of the Knox Local Australia Day Awards 2019 were recognised for their selfless spirit, dedication and leadership in the service of our community.

The 2019 recipients are:

  • Citizen of the Year: Andrea Cobern and Johann Poppenbeck (joint winners)
  • Young Citizen of the Year: Joel Porter
  • Volunteer of the Year: Lyn Shepherd
  • Elder Citizen of the Year: George and Pat Hetrel (joint winners)
  • Local Hero: Shameela Essop

Festivities also included a special flag-raising ceremony and an Australian Citizenship Ceremony, during which 140 Knox residents from 28 countries became official citizens of Australia.

This year marks 70 years since Australian citizenship was introduced into law, creating for the first time, a legal status of being uniquely Australian.

Quotes attributable to the Mayor, Cr Jake Keogh:

  • On behalf of Council, we applaud all of our Knox Local Australia Awards recipients as well as nominees, for epitomising a spirit of generosity and selflessness in the service of others.
  • On Australia Day, it’s important that we take a moment to honor and, reflect upon, the achievements of community members who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to serve the community.
  • The men and women we recognise today have contributed in a way that makes us better as a society, and that’s something we should never lose sight of, nor take for granted.
  • In our busy, modern lives it is too easy sometimes to overlook the importance and value of community service.
  • However what we see with all of our award recipients, this and previous years, is a commitment to service that does our community proud.
  • Council is also delighted to welcome, upon the 70th anniversary of Australian citizenship being introduced into law, 140 Knox residents from 28 different countries as our newest citizens.
