Media Release - Leading the charge to a sustainable future

Knox Council is leading the charge to a more sustainable future for local drivers, installing two electric vehicle charging stations at the Civic Centre in Wantirna South.

The electric charge points will be available for members of the public to use at no cost, and will also be used to power Council’s three new electric fleet vehicles. Council was scheduled to update three of its fleet vehicles at this time, and has chosen to replace them with fully-electric vehicles.

This is in line with council’s goal of moving to a more sustainable future and leading by example as electric vehicles become more common and more affordable.

The first fleet vehicles Council has ordered is the Hyundai Ioniq, which arrived last week.

Council plans to order two Nissan Leaf cars once they are released into the Australian market around late June/July this year.

The Hyundai Ioniq can plug into a 10amp electric power point, as well as the Type 2 charge point.

Electrical work to install the two charging points will take place during March, and be ready for the public to use in April.

This initiative will see the first public charge points installed in Knox and also close one of the gaps between electric charge points around Melbourne, that can be seen on maps such a plugshare.com

Quotes attributable to the Mayor, Cr Jake Keogh:

  • As outlined in the Knox Community and Council Plan 2018-2022, we are committed to reducing greenhouse emissions and this is just one initiative towards that goal.
  • There is, rightly, an expectation in the community that government should lead the way in the area of sustainability and improved environmental outcomes.
  • One of the ways we can do that is by providing services and infrastructure that open up more choices for residents who are looking for cleaner and more environmentally sustainable options, including the use of electric vehicles.
