Media Statement - Bayswater Youth Hall

With public safety and amenity chiefly in mind, Knox City Council will proceed with a planned demolition of the disused Bayswater Youth Hall in Station Street, Bayswater.

The Bayswater Youth Hall is a circa 1960s building, consisting of a public hall with an office/meeting room extension.

The building’s structural condition has deteriorated significantly in recent years, forcing its closure in September 2017, and the relocation of hall users into alternative accommodation.

Works to stabilise the building over the short to medium term would come at significant cost to ratepayers, with the main core of the building (walls, roof, frame, foundations etc) still needing to be replaced within the next 10-15 years.

Given these concerns and the building’s unavailability for public use, Council has decided to schedule its demolition before undertaking consultation about the future of the site.

In the short term, Council is investigating the provision of a ‘pop-up’ park as an interim/temporary measure on-site while its future use is determined.

Issued: 19 March 2019
