Chess Club CDF Grant

Checkmate on Community Grant

Applications open for Community Grants

An active member of the Knox community for more than 42 years, Eddie Atacador realised he wanted to do something more for the community when he retired in 2017.

What began as a social game between Eddie and his nephew each week at Westfield, gradually grew into a larger group playing chess as a way to socialise.

As the group grew, so too did the demand for more equipment and a regular meeting point. Council connected Eddie with the Coonara Community House who manage the Westfield Community Space, and soon after he applied for a grant through Council’s Community Development Fund.

‘I saw the need, and the community space available and so I thought why not’, Eddie said.

‘It started with two people then just grew and grew. We enjoy it, it’s become a social hub. Some of our players are young but most of them are retired – the older ones teach the next generation.’

Known as the Knox Community Chess Enthusiasts (KCCE) the group meets every Thursday at the Westfield Community Space, where around 40 people come and go throughout the day.

‘Since they’ve joined their mind becomes sharper and it’s important to socialise and to keep your mind active,’ Eddie says. ‘I can see the benefit, so I’d like to expand this program,’ he added.

Through Council’s Community Development Fund, Eddie and the KCCE received a $1500 grant which he used to purchase tables, time clocks, chess sets, a giant chess set, promotional t-shirts and a filing cabinet for the chess equipment. He also provides free tea and coffee to the players each week.

Eddie is making a wonderful contribution to the community and together with the KCCE group is the perfect example of how individuals with enthusiasm and a simple idea can make the most of Council grants to benefit the community.

Everyone is welcome to join the Knox Community Chess Enthusiasts. For more information contact Eddie on 0409 417 719.
