Media release - Knox CityCouncil elects new Mayor and Deputy Mayor

First all-female leadership in Knox history

Cr Nicole Seymour has been elected Mayor of Knox City Council, with Cr Marcia Timmers-Leitch to serve as Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.

Cr Seymour is a long-term Knox resident, having lived in the Tirhatuan Ward for over 20 years. Following in the footsteps of many generations of volunteers, Cr Seymour has been an active participant in the local community since her teenage years, which ultimately drove her to join Council in 2012.

Cr Seymour said the opportunity to serve as Mayor of Knox was a great honour and expressed thanks to Council and to the community as a whole.

“I am truly thankful to my peers for their vote of support and I am confident that our varied perspectives and personalities can work harmoniously to deliver great outcomes for the community we all serve so passionately,” said Cr Seymour.

“The next year will be crucial for this Council, and we need a year of strength, of unity and of clarity. That’s what I promise to deliver to my fellow councillors and to the Knox community.”

Council also took the opportunity to thank outgoing Mayor Cr Jake Keogh.

Cr Keogh was recognised for his sound judgment and for bringing a fresh and energetic style to Council that has lifted its profile and inspired significant positive change. Cr Keogh shared his gratitude for the chance to serve as Mayor over the last 12 months, explaining that the community’s passion drives each councillor and makes the role even more rewarding.

The new Deputy Mayor, Cr Timmers-Leitch has lived in the heart of Wantirna’s Collier Ward for 12 years, running a small business with her husband and raising her three school-aged children, and has a background in commerce and marketing.

The election of Crs Seymour and Timmers-Leitch marks the first time in Knox City Council history that the roles of both Mayor and Deputy Mayor have been served by female Councillors.
