Gardens for Wildlife (G4W)  Printer Friendly

The Gardens for Wildlife (G4W) program is in partnership with the Knox Environment Society (KES) and is designed to encourage you, the owner or occupier of a suburban block, to create an area in your garden for local wildlife. This can be done by providing habitat planted with locally indigenous, Australian native or suitable exotic species.

The program is free to join and once you have registered, an assessor will visit to provide advice and answer any questions you may have about the type of wildlife you would like to attract. After the visit you will receive a 'report pack' containing a written assessment, a Certificate of Achievement, a Gardens for Wildlife booklet, a letterbox plaque to help promote the program and further garden and local wildlife information.

What is Biodiversity?
With more than 1.9 million known species of animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms and a multitude of species yet to be discovered, the Earth is simply teeming with life. Living organisms come in thousands of shapes, sizes, colours and are found everywhere from the depths of the oceans to the highest mountain peaks, to your very own back garden! This huge variety of life is called 'biodiversity'.

Unfortunately, biodiversity is declining every year, as more and more species are dying out. Loss in biodiversity also endangers our own basic needs for survival.

You can help by joining a Friends Group or registering in the Gardens for Wildlife program. Visit this web page for a list of Friends Groups in Knox.

Living with Wildlife in Knox
In Knox we are very fortunate to have a large variety of wildlife that visit or reside alongside us. Learn more about some of our wild neighbours.

Peregrine Post Newsletters
Gardens for Wildlife participants receive the Peregrine Post newsletter every two months. The Peregrine Post features articles on our native flora and fauna together with useful information on environmental weeds, upcoming events and ways to help your local environment. View past editions of the Peregrine Post.

KinderGardens for Wildlife
The children and community you work with can help save local plants and animals from the danger of extinction. For example, children in your early childhood setting could help protect our Knox Sword Grass Butterfly. Or they could help a platypus to thrive in Rowville. Even Powerful Owls could be protected by the efforts of your children.

KinderGardens for Wildlife is a new initiative to extend the well established ‘Gardens for Wildlife’ program beyond back yards into early childhood playgrounds. It’s all aimed at encouraging children’s understanding and awareness of the importance of a child’s local environment. Learn more about the KinderGardens for Wildlife program.

Knox Wildlife Atlas
Here in Knox we are lucky enough to have some of the most amazing flora and fauna, most of which is found nowhere else on Earth. Whilst there are many common species found in Knox, the diversity of fauna in Knox is enhanced by our close proximity to the Dandenong Ranges.

The Knox Wildlife Atlas is designed to record the native animals that live in and move through the municipality.

All interested community members (not just experts) are encouraged to submit their sightings of native animals for entry into the database.

This information is important as currently, there is a gap in our knowledge regarding native animals that live in Knox. The data will then assist us in making decisions that may affect wildlife in our municipality.

Please complete the Knox Wildlife Atlas form to register the details of your native animal sighting.
