About Immerse

Immerse 2021

Background

Immerse is a unique exhibition program that breaks away from the traditional confines of an art gallery, and shares the arts in unexpected places throughout Knox. It is a conversation with an audience of thousands, and encourages creativity in every day spaces.

Developed by Knox City Council in 2015, Immerse quickly became a celebrated regional arts event, offering a unique way of sharing and celebrating the arts within an (sub)urban context.

Now moved to a biennial model, Immerse continues to surprise and inspire with its contemporary and diverse program, challenging both the artists and the audience to experience creativity in new and surprising ways. With the support of professional curators, artists enjoy a mentoring relationship as they explore new ways to exhibit their work for maximum exposure.

The Immerse 2021 program faces new challenges with Corona Virus, and will offer a mix of live and virtual exhibitions, arts experiences and performances across three key hubs from 11 – 26 September 2021, offering a unique program that safely responds to the Victorian Covid restrictions in place during event planning and delivery.

Immerse 2021 Vision

Facing new challenges in 2021, Immerse retains the vision to bring the arts into unexpected places, igniting our community with surprising, thoughtful and innovative creative experiences, calling on the arts as an important tool in community renewal, activation and celebration.

The 2021 program aims to:

  • Engage and promote local artists, local learning, community centres and local business.
  • Support artists and encourage art sector development, art sales and arts promotion.
  • Foster partnerships between local artists, art organisations, venues, business and Council.
  • Enable creative, business and community engagement and collaboration.
  • Raise the profile, accessibility and participation in the Arts within Knox.
  • Activate spaces with unique, place-based creativity.
  • Safely deliver a public and/or virtual program within current Victorian Covid restrictions.

Immerse 2021 Hubs Model

The Immerse Hubs model provides a centralised focus on three key neighbourhood precincts across Knox in 2021, including:

  • Wantirna South
  • Rowville
  • The Basin

Satellite locations around Knox are also selected for stand-alone feature installations and exhibitions.

The Immerse Hubs model selects a variety of key venues, precincts and village spaces to focus arts activation within, and enables greater visibility, easier access and a stronger ‘immersion’ of exhibitions, public arts, public programs and other genres all co-located in key sites.

CovidSafe Program

In response to COVID-19 in 2021 art works, installations, performances and public programing will be primarily located outdoors, within civic venues and as virtual offerings. Other indoor exhibition spaces may become available, such as cafes and businesses, in response to Covid restrictions for Victoria for indoor spaces and indoor events.

Public Programs will take place across the 3 weeks encouraging local Knox residents and the broader public alike to participate.
