Pay your rates

You can pay your Knox Council rates in full or in instalments, setup payment and notification options, request a rates refund and find out about payment assistance.

Pay online with your credit card

  • You'll need your 7-digit rates assessment number which is shown at the top of your rates notice.
  • Please note all payments made by credit card (MasterCard or Visa only) will incur a 0.4% charge.

Direct debit

Register for direct debit for rates

  • You can register for direct debit to pay your current year's rates and charges.
  • You cannot register for direct debit if you have any overdue balances.
  • Please clear any outstanding payments through one of the other payment options
  • All payments made by credit card (MasterCard or Visa only) will incur a 0.4% charge

Register for direct debit online

  1. The first step is to identify your property
  2. You'll need the 7-digit rates assessment number details shown at the top of your rates notice
  3. Your credit card or bank account details
  4. Under Payment Frequency you can select to pay by 4 or 9 payments, or to pay the full amount

Once you've registered for direct debit

We aim to confirm your rates direct debit setup within 5 business days.

You will be responsible for maintaining your details and making payments on time:

  • Make sure your credit card or bank details are current
  • Update details for any expiring credit cards
  • Ensure any changes to your payment schedule or direct debit details are made at least 7 days before the next scheduled payment

Cancelling a direct debit

You can cancel an existing direct debit online.

  • You will need your rates assessment number shown at the top of the rate notice
  • You should request a cancellation at least 7 days before the due date

BPAY and BPAY View

To pay your rates by BPAY.

  • Contact your participating bank or financial institution for details on how to make a payment.
  • Payment can be made from your cheque or savings account or credit card.
  • The biller code and rates assessment number are shown on the front of your rates notice next to the BPAY symbol.

BPAY View allows you to receive, pay and store your rates notice through your online banking account.

Once you have registered to receive your rates notice via BPAY View you will no longer receive a paper rates notice.

To receive your rates notice with BPAY View, you just need to:

  • login to your online banking account
  • look for the BPAY View or View Bills section
  • register to receive your rates notice by entering:
    • the BPAY Biller Code: 18077
    • your BPAY View reference number (the 7 digit number in the BPAY View area of your rates notice).

Telephone

You can pay your rates by calling Knox City Council payment line.

  • Call 1300 668 153 and pay by Visa or MasterCard.
  • This number is an automated service. You must have your rates assessment number and credit card details ready.
  • Payments can be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Please note all payments made by credit card (MasterCard or Visa only) will incur a 0.4% charge. This enables Council to recover the cost of merchant fees charged by banks for credit card transactions.
Post

By post

You can pay by cheque posted to Council.

  • Make your cheque payable to Knox City Council and cross it 'not negotiable'.
  • Post your cheque to Knox City Council, 511 Burwood Hwy, Wantirna South Vic 3152.
  • Receipts are not issued for payments by post.
  • Please do not pin or staple your cheque to the notice when returning the payment.

At the post office

You can also pay in person at any Australia Post office. Present your account intact with your payment.

In person

Drop into Knox City Council and pay in person.

  • Go to Knox City Council Civic Centre, located at 511 Burwood Highway in Wantirna South.
  • Present your rates notice intact to cashier to pay by cash or EFTPOS.
  • The Knox City Council Customer Service Desk is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm (closed on public holidays).

Pay in full or by instalments

  • You can pay your rates in one simple payment on or before 15 February 2023.
  • To pay by instalments, you need to have paid your first instalment before 30 September 2022.
Pay your rates in full

You can pay your rates in one simple payment on or before 15 February 2024.

Interest will be charged on all amounts outstanding after 15 February 2024. This is calculated until paid in full.

Pay in 4 instalments

You can split your rates across 4 payments.

The due dates are:

  • Instalment 1 - 30 September 2023
  • Instalment 2 - 30 November 2023
  • Instalment 3 - 28 February 2024
  • Instalment 4 - 31 May 2024

You must pay your first instalment, including any arrears, before 30 September 2023.

When full payment of the first instalment is received by the due date, we will send further instalment notices at least 14 days before each due date.

If you miss the date you will have to pay the rates in full by 15 February 2024.

Interest will be charged on all amounts outstanding after each instalment. This is calculated from the due date of that instalment until paid.

Pay in 9 instalments

You can split your rates across 9 payments. Registration is required:

  • send your assessment number by SMS to 0481 891 010 by 30 September 2023
  • full payment for the first instalment of the 9 instalments shown on the notice.

Council will schedule and send an SMS reminder for all remaining monthly payments 5–7 days before each payment is due.

Registration is not required for payment by direct debit.

The due dates are:

  • Instalment 1 - 30 September 2023
  • Instalment 2 - 31 October 2023
  • Instalment 3 - 30 November 2023
  • Instalment 4 - 31 December 2023
  • Instalment 5 - 31 January 2024
  • Instalment 6 - 28 February 2024
  • Instalment 7 - 31 March 2024
  • Instalment 8 - 30 April 2024
  • Instalment 9 - 31 May 20234

Please note, if you wish to pay by 9 instalments:

  • Council will send am SMS reminder 5-7 days before each due date.
  • Your first instalment, including any arrears, must be paid in full on or before 30 September 2023.

Requesting a rates refund

You can request submit a rates refund request by:

  • Email – [email protected]
  • Mail - 511 Burwood Hwy, Wantirna South, VIC, 3152
  • We aim to process rates refund requests within 15 business days.

Your refund requests must include:

  • Your rates assessment number and property address
  • Date of payment
  • A copy of the proof of payment showing the amount that was paid (unless the credit is a direct result of a pensioner concession being applied).

For payments that were originally made by:

  • BPAY - a refund by Council will be sent back to the same account from which it was paid
  • Credit Card - a refund by Council will be sent back to the same credit card from which it was paid.

Other rate refunds will be paid by:

  • Cheque or by EFT
  • To all owners of the property as shown on Council records, unless an authority signed by all owners as shown on Council records is submitted to pay otherwise.
  • If requesting a refund be paid by EFT, a copy of a recent bank statement must also be supplied that clearly shows the BSB, Account number and name/s of the bank account holders.

If you owe arrears

Arrears are:

  • any money owed from your previous year's rates notice
  • any late payments.

Arrears may be subject to legal action and are payable immediately.

Interest will be charged on arrears and late payment from the due date. This will continue until all rates are paid in full.

The penalty interest rate is applied in accordance with the Local Government Act 1989.

The current interest rate is 10 per cent.

Payment assistance

Council offers payment assistance to people who have suffered loss of income or are in financial difficulty.
