Giving back to the community at Montania restaurant

For the team at Ferntree Gully restaurant Montania, starting their Pay It Forward initiative was all about giving back to the community that has supported them through their 20 years of trading.

Montania owner George Dimitriadis started the initiative after a local sporting club Montania sponsors encouraged all its players to make a purchase at the restaurant.

“We felt overwhelmed with support and wanted to give something back. We felt this was the perfect way to also invite the local community to contribute,” George said.

“As hard as COVID-19 has hit small businesses, we know there is always someone who has been hit harder.”

This initiative has helped many people including the elderly and public service officers. Customers are also able to nominate community members in need of help.

“One of our customers gave us the details of a single mother with six kids at home where the father had passed away 12 months ago,” George explained.

“Stories like this make you want to help - you can't even begin to imagine the struggle.”

“We also had an anonymous donation that set up free coffees specifically for volunteers at the Knox Toy Library.”

Montania also delivers food to an 87 year-old woman every week and checks in on her at home.

“It's just great to see people helping and wanting to put a smile on someone's face,” George said.

“You never know when someone’s luck is going to run out. This is something that will stay with us forever now.”
