Book boxes for backpack beds

Angus Cooke from ERL

Boxes of preloved books will be sold to fund backpack beds for those experiencing homelessness or sleeping rough.

On 11 and 12 March, Eastern Regional Libraries will be selling mystery boxes of books for just $5 with all proceeds from the sale going to local charity ‘Backpack Bed for Homeless.’

ERL Corporate Manager, Sarah Hopkins said the book sale comes as part of the organisation’s annual reallocation and sale of withdrawn stock

“During 2020, we weren’t able to run any book sales and we now have quite a lot of excess stock,” says Sarah.

“We’ve got a lot of books boxed up in our head office, so we decided it’d be nice to have a ‘farmgate’ style book sale and donate the money to a grassroots charity.”

Sarah said ERL has been considering donating to Backpack Bed for Homeless for a while as it makes a measurable impact on people’s lives in the Knox area.

“We do find homeless people come into the libraries throughout the day, whether it be for somewhere quiet to sit, the warmth, facilities, or even just to relax in the tranquil environment.

“Here at ERL, we have often found ourselves frustrated by our inability to really drive any change, so this seemed like a great avenue to raise money for the cause.”

Customers will be able to select a box based on its genre, but the individual titles will be a surprise. Two lucky boxes will also include a book shop voucher.

Backpack Bed for Homeless provides life-saving backpack beds and fire retardant sleeping bags to those sleeping rough and without shelter.

The book sale will be held at Eastern Regional Libraries’ head office at 1350 Ferntree Gully Road, Scoresby. For more information, visit
