Supporting healthy family relationships

Relationships Victoria

With the challenges of the past year increasing pressures on some families, Relationships Australia Victoria (RAV) has used new methods to support families with mental health and family violence services.

“In late March 2020, the organisation transitioned from face-to-face service delivery to telephone and video-based appointments for the safety of clients and staff members,” says Assistant Manager for RAV, Jackie Blake.

“This enabled counselling for individuals, couples and families through face-to-face, telephone, video and online channels.

“As the counsellors adapted their practice to working remotely, the focus remained on client confidentiality, the therapeutic relationship, supporting current and new clients during a period of great stress, uncertainty and change.”

Lisa said that RAV clients in Knox have been “very responsive,” with many asking to continue it as part of the “COVID-normal.”

“Clients have found telephone services to be just as effective as face-to-face and it has minimised barriers to attending appointments such as travel time, transport and childcare.

RAV provides counselling, family dispute resolution, family violence prevents, support and recovery, specialised mental health and trauma services and professional training to help families within Knox, and surrounding communities.
