Dating back to the 1970s Knox City Council has an enduring commitment to building a culturally rich and engaged community through the arts. Public Art not only adds visual appeal to our shared environments but can also provoke important conversations, encourage a sense of place and social cohesion, improve mental health and wellbeing and can make public spaces safer and more approachable.
The Knox Public Art collection is substantial, and includes works by renowned public artists such as Matt Calvert, David Booth (aka Ghostpatrol) and Carla McRae. The Billboard at Gilbert Park Skate Precinct, and the Light boxes at Cinema Lane in Boronia, are also platforms, which allow for the rotation of art in the public domain.
The Knox Public Art Policy and Public Art Implementation Plan is Council’s public statement of commitment to an ongoing public art development program, offering a clear framework for long-term planning alongside major developments and neighbourhood renewal projects, and a guide for site and artist commissioning processes.
