Reduce your environmental impact

Victorians are great recyclers and we don't want that to change. Here are a few ideas on how you can help reduce your carbon footprint.

Avoid

The best thing we can do is avoid waste.

  • Shop smart – only buy products you need.
  • Choose items that are packaging-free or have minimal packaging that can be recycled or reused.
  • Repair, restore or upcycle your possessions.

Reuse

Reuse what you can.

  • Glass jars make great storage.
  • Donate items that are in good condition.
  • Buy second-hand.
  • Buy products made from recycled materials.
  • Borrow where you can.

Reduce

Discourage unnecessary packaging on a product.

  • Choose a product with less waste.
  • Give feedback to retailers or producers, asking them to reduce their waste.

Recycle

Confused about what goes in your kerbside recycling? As a general guide:

  • Yes: Paper, cardboard, aluminium, glass or plastic bottles and containers.
  • No: Polystyrene, soft plastics (like shopping bags), food, clothing, large metal items, batteries, electronic goods, nappies.

Recycling soft plastic items

You can recycle and keep the following items out of landfill using the REDcycle program:

  • soft plastics
  • plastic bags
  • flexible plastic packaging.

REDcycle have collection bins in local supermarkets.

There are many drop-off points for plastic bags and soft plastic materials across Knox.
