Introducing recycled plastics to our road surfaces

Following successful trials in 2020 of a new asphalt product that uses recycled plastic containers such as milk and softdrink bottles as part of the compound, we have introduced it as part of our road resurfacing program.

The first project for 2021 is Karoo Rd, Rowville where 510 tonnes of recycled asphalt was rolled out.

For every tonne of asphalt, there are approximately 25 plastic bottles recycled. So, the asphalt used on Karoo Rd has reused more than 12,750 plastic bottles!

The benefits of incorporating plastics into the asphalt will help reduce the volume of plastics going to landfill and lessen our carbon footprint. In addition, our testing has shown that this recycled product has a number of benefits from traditional asphalt including improved resistance to damage, strength and an increased lifespan.
