How we maintain our street trees
We complete street tree assessments every 2 years on each street in Knox.
We review and assess street trees for:
- health and structure
- potential planting opportunities
- life expectancy
- species and location
- tree and infrastructure relationships
- compatibility with other capital works projects.
We remove and replace any trees that:
- are of poor health or structure
- have a short life expectancy
- are poorly located
- do not provide maximum benefit to the community.
Street tree pruning
Knox is divided into zones with each zone being pruned at a specific time.
This makes sure:
- trees are clear of overhead electric wires
- pedestrians are safe to use footpaths without concern of low hanging branches
- traffic is safe to use the roadway without concern for low branches
- deadwood is removed from the tree
- juvenile trees are shaped.
Request a street tree inspection
You can ask us to inspect your street tree or report a fallen tree or branch at any time. We aim to inspect routine tree maintenance requests on Council land within 5 business days. After the inspection, we will give you schedules for fixing things, focusing on safety first. For emergency tree requests on Council land, we aim to inspect and make them safe within 24 hours.
Planting new trees
We plant trees between April to November, while the soil is moist and the rain is plentiful. New street trees are semi-advanced stock 1 to 1.5 metres in height. We monitor them monthly for the first 2 years and water them using recycled water (when available) over the warmer months.
Between July to September we also run our infill tree planting program. We use low-cost, high-technology satellite images to assess the canopy cover of each street in Knox. We plant areas of low canopy coverage as a priority. Where a street has a strong existing theme, we select new trees that match or complement the existing streetscape. We will fill all free planting spaces.
The infill planting program is guided by our Green Streets Policy and Street Tree Asset Management Plan.
If you receive a notification card, that means a new tree will be coming within our next tree planting program. If you would like to know more about this, please call the Parks team on 9298 8425.
