- Parking sensors installed in Knox
A more efficient and accurate way of monitoring and managing time-bound parking areas is being introduced in Knox. 700 electronic in-ground sensors are being installed from August 2023. Sensors will be placed in bays where current time restrictions apply.
Installation of these sensors will see no changes to existing parking time limits, the infringement process, or fine amounts. As outlined in the Knox Parking Compliance Strategy, sensors are being installed to help us manage parking in our community in a fairer and more equitable way.
Electronic parking sensors provide a more accurate, consistent and efficient process for regulating parking. The technology is economical and minimises the need for manual checking, allowing for more effective use of parking officer resources. The sensors encourage more drivers to comply with restrictions and through efficient turnover, spaces in high-demand areas will become more available, making it easier for anyone living, working or visiting Knox to park their vehicle.
The occupancy data collected from the sensors will also provide us with opportunity to assess parking use and identify where future improvements can be made for the benefit of our community.
Sensors are small electronic devices that are installed in the ground underneath parking bays to detect and record when a vehicle enters or departs the bay. When a vehicle moves in to a space, the sensor is activated and records the arrival time. If a vehicle overstays the maximum time permitted, officers are notified and can investigate if an offence has occurred.
A staggered installation of the in-ground parking sensors will commence from 7 August 2023. Stage 1 will see 415 sensors installed across the following locations:
- Studfield Shopping Centre, Wantirna South – between Somerset Street and Coleman Road
- Wantirna Mall, Wantirna – between Mountain Highway and Thaxted Parade
- Mountain High car park, Bayswater – between High Street and Station Street
- Station Street, Bayswater – between Pine Road and Mountain Highway
- High Street, Bayswater – between Mountain Highway and Pine Road
- Dorset Square car park, Boronia – between Dorset Road and Floriston Road
Stage 2 will take place later this year where it is expected that a further 285 sensors will be installed in Boronia, Bayswater, Wantirna South and around the Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully.
Installation of all sensors is expected to be completed by November 2023, subject to favourable weather conditions.
To minimise impacts, installation works will take place from 8pm until 4am, Sunday – Thursday. Minor noise disruptions may occur but will be kept to a minimum. Car parks and roads will remain open but where necessary, traffic controls will be in place to ensure safe access in and around the works areas.
Sensors will become active approximately one week following installation.
