Additional support for children

Preschool field officers (PSFOs) help children, including those with additional needs, take part in kindergarten.

About the program

This program supports kindergarten teachers and educators in meeting the needs of all children, including those with additional needs.

Additional needs may include:

  • social skills
  • emotional wellbeing
  • communication skills
  • behavioural issues
  • thinking and movement
  • inclusion and participation
  • kindergarten or school readiness.

Preschool field officers (PSFOs)

Preschool field officers (PSFOs) are specialist early childhood teachers with extra qualifications.

PSFOs support children's individual development needs by:

  • coaching and mentoring educators
  • discussing a child's learning and development with families and caregivers
  • providing support and guidance
  • connecting families with education and support services
  • enabling a collaborative approach between families and educators.

Discuss your child’s development with their kindergarten teacher.

The teacher can arrange a referral.

The PSFO program supports kindergarten teachers and educators to gain knowledge, skills and confidence in:

  • providing support for children with additional needs
  • implementing strategies and practices
  • planning for all children in their program
  • individualising practices based on a child's ability, interests and development
  • responding to family concerns about their child's development.

Eligibility for support

This is a free advisory service for families and caregivers of children accessing funded kindergarten.

To be eligible, a child must attend a funded kindergarten program including:

  • Council operated services
  • independent services
  • kindergarten delivered within long day care.
