Playgroups

Council's early years' centres host playgroups for parents and carers of babies and children from birth to 5 years of age.

There are 2 types of playgroups in Knox – community playgroups and supported playgroups.

Community playgroups

Community playgroups at Council’s early years' centres are incorporated associations run by parent and carer volunteers.

Knox City Council’s Playgroups Team provides resourcing and support for all community playgroups.

Rainbow Family Playgroup (LGBTQIA+ families)

The Knox Rainbow Family Playgroup is a safe space for LGBTQIA+ families and their children to build friendships, play, learn and have fun.

Multicultural playgroups

Chinese Playgroup

Join a group of parents and carers of Chinese background with their babies, toddlers and preschool children. The group meets weekly to build friendships, play, learn and have fun.

Join a group of parents and carers of Spanish background with their babies, toddlers and preschool children. The group meets weekly to build friendships, play, learn and have fun.

Punjabi Playgroup

Join a group of parents and carers from a Punjabi background with their babies, toddlers and preschool children. The group meets weekly to build friendships, play, learn and have fun.

  • 1 session every second Friday (during the school term)

Dads' Playgroup

For children birth to school age, and their dads and father-figures. The group meets weekly to build friendships, play, learn and have fun.

Intergenerational and Grandparents Playgroups are a fun, safe and educational way for children, grandparents, caregivers and older people to join together through fun activities.

Supported playgroups

There are a number of supported playgroups offered across Knox to families with diverse needs. Sessions are delivered by a trained facilitator.

Playconnect Supported Playgroup

Playconnect is a free peer support programs for parents and carers of young children from birth to 5 years with a:

  • disability
  • developmental delay
  • chronic medical condition.

Smalltalk Supported Playgroup

Knox City Council operates 5 Smalltalk Supported Playgroup sessions a week during school terms. These sessions are available for eligible families with babies and children from birth to 5 years.

Smalltalk Supported Playgroup sessions are free to attend.

To be eligible for Smalltalk, a family member must hold a Health Care Card or similar and have a child aged between birth to 5 years.

At a Smalltalk Supported Playgroup you can:

  • get tips and strategies to support your child’s learning and language development
  • interact in fun, engaging activities and experiences
  • meet other families with young children in your local area
  • gain support in the development of parenting skills.
Young Parents Supported Playgroup

Young Parents Supported Playgroup sessions are for young mums and dads aged 25 and under with babies under 12 months.

They provide an opportunity for young parents to meet other parents close to their age and build a peer support network.

Sessions are free to attend and are facilitated by Knox City Council’s Youth Team.

About our playgroups

Playgroup is having special time to play together, build relationships, meet new friends and gain a sense of community involvement. Playgroups usually meet on a regular basis once a week during school terms.

Playgroup provides an environment where children can:

  • learn to play and socialise with other children
  • increase their skills and confidence
  • extend language and early literacy through words, books and stories
  • be supported to enjoy active play and share healthy snacks
  • experience children with diverse needs and different cultures

Parents and carers can:

  • build relationships and meet new friends
  • access parenting information, resources and support
  • learn about childhood development
  • experience community involvement.

Playgroup activities

Playgroup sessions can include:

  • indoor and outdoor play
  • art and craft activities
  • music and movement
  • playdough and puzzles
  • storytime and books
  • snack time.
