Knox City Council has playgroup sessions where parents, carers and grandparents with babies and children 0-5 years are welcome to attend. You’ll find a fun, friendly playgroup operating from many locations across the municipality, with times and days to suit you, including culturally specific, young parent (under 25 years) and dads playgroups. Playgroups meet for up to two hours once per week.

Playgroup Playdays

To Celebrate Children's Week 19th - 28th October 2018, Knox City Council invites you to attend an October Playgroup Playday - Fun, Friendship, Play and Learning.

Come experience a playgroup session with us:

  • Art and craft activities
  • Playdough, sandplay and puzzles
  • Outdoor and indoor play
  • For babies to preschoolers all welcome!

Playgroup Interactive Worm Farming Workshop

In celebration of Children’s Week 19th- 28th October 2018 come along and join us at the Alice Johnson Playgroup Centre to participate in an interactive Worm Farming Workshop.
Participants will help get the playgroup’s worm farm operational and gain ideas on how to create one in their own backyard on any budget.
The workshop is suitable for children ages from 0 to 5years, with information presented in a simple and fun way so that babies and toddlers can marvel at the majestic worm.
Children can confidently set up and manage a worm farm, and adults can learn the do’s and don’ts of what they can eat.

Learning Through Play

Playgroup provides a safe, stimulating environment that allows parents, carers and children the opportunity to:


  • Learn to play and socialise with other children
  • Increase their skills and confidence
  • Extend language and early literacy through words, books and stories
  • Are supported to enjoy active play and share healthy snacks
  • Experience children with diverse needs and different cultures

Parents and Carers

  • Build relationships and meet new friends
  • Access parenting information, resources and support
  • Learn about childhood development
  • Experience community involvement

Playgroup Sessions can include:

  • Indoor and outdoor play
  • Art and craft activities
  • Music and movement
  • Playdough and puzzles
  • Story time and books
  • Snack time

Supported Playgroups

Supported playgroups are offered to families with diverse needs and are conducted by a facilitator. These are free of cost local supported playgroups for parents and carers of young children 0-5 years with additional needs, developmental delay, disability, chronic medical condition or families in financial hardship, isolation or with limited family support.

'Smalltalk' Supported Playgroups

Knox City Council operates weekly Supported Playgroups during school terms to eligible families with babies and children birth to five years of age.

Supported Playgroups deliver the Smalltalk Program by a trained facilitator, are free of cost to attend and a healthy morning tea is provided.

Who can attend?

To be eligible to enrol in a Supported Playgroup, a household family member must hold a Health Care Card or equivalent and have a child/ren from birth up to five years of age.

Young Parents Supported Playgroups

Specifically for parents, Mums and Dads aged 25 and under with babies and young children.
Young Parent Playgroup provides an opportunity for young parents to meet other parents close to their age and build a peer support network. Free of cost to attend.
