- Helping Reunite Lost Pets
Pets that are registered with Council can be quickly and safely reunited with their owners if they get lost.
Last financial year, 685 dogs and cats were impounded in Knox.
Pet owners can help keep dogs and cats safe by checking their details are up to date when you renew your pet registration by 10 April.
Pet registration and microchipping cats and dogs are important requirements for all pet owners. If your pet gets lost or wanders away, registration will make it easier for us to reunite your pet with you.
When we can’t reunite pet because it is unregistered we will take the pet to Animal Aid, our animal pound. Sadly, there is a high percentage of lost cats and dogs that do not get reunited with their owners. Only 15 per cent of cats, and 79 per cent of dogs that are impounded are reunited with their owners. We highly encourage pet owners to register and microchip their pets to help ensure their lost pets can be returned safely and quickly.
Pet registration also supports a range of community facilities and services, including:
- 24/7 after hours animal collection and urgent response service
- investigation into animal cruelty and dog attack reports
- responding to animal related customer requests
- free trip home for registered pets when they get lost the first time
- dog play parks
- discounted desexing voucher scheme for concession cardholders
- our annual Pets in the Park event, happening this year on 21 April
Pet registration renewals are due 10 April each year. You can update your details by visiting our Register my pet or renew registration webpage or call 9298 8000.
