Great Southern Bio Blitz

Grab your camera, explore local bushland, and help map the region’s native biodiversity using iNaturalist.

The Great Southern BioBlitz is an international period of intense biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within several designated areas across the Southern Hemisphere in spring.

The purpose of this event is to highlight both the immense biodiversity spread across the Southern Hemisphere in the flourishing springtime, as well as to engage the public in science and nature learning using the citizen science platform iNaturalist.

This year, Knox is partnering with neighbouring Councils to contribute as the Greater Melbourne Collaboration.

The BioBlitz is a great way to learn about native plants and animals, get involved in local conservation and tap into an online community of biodiversity enthusiasts. All you need to do is head out to your local bushland reserve to discover and take photos of native plants and animals and upload them to the iNaturalist app.

How to participate?

  • Download the free and easy to use iNaturalist App

  • Take photographs of your observations

  • Upload your photographs to the iNaturalist app
