Have your say on safer speeds for Napoleon Road

We are proposing to state government that the 60 km/h speed limit on Napoleon Road be extended south of Kellets Road through to Wellington Road and that 40 km/h time-based school zones be introduced near the two school crossings.

Feedback from the community is encouraged and will be included in the proposal being provided to state government. Consultation is open until 14 September.

The current speed limit along this section of road is 80km/h. Pedestrians and cyclists face life-threatening injury if struck by vehicles traveling at this speed. Driving slower will reduce the risk of accidents occurring.

The crossings can be difficult to see when driving at the current 80 km/h speed limit. Improving safety at these crossings could encourage greater use, particularly by children wanting to walk or cycle to school independently.

Some drivers may be concerned about the impacts on travel times, but research shows that these lower speed limits will only add 57 seconds to journeys along this section of road during 40km/h school drop-off and pick up periods and 28 seconds at all other times — and could save a life.

This proposed speed reduction will align with other reduced speeds in the neighbourhood, brought about by community support for improved road safety. The most recent being a reduction on Wellington Road from 80 km/h to 70 km/h in both directions, effective from June this year.

In 2023, we proposed 40km/h school zones at the two crossings; however, feedback from both the community and state government showed that drivers struggle to slow from 80 km/h to 40 km/h. Based on this feedback, we have changed our proposal.
