Allergen training for food businesses

Knox are working in partnership with Greater Dandenong and Kingston City Councils to provide a free allergen training session for local food manufacturers on 11 November.

The session is designed to update business owners and quality assurance managers of changes to the FSANZ labelling of allergens and help them understand their allergen management responsibilities.  Our environmental health team will be supporting businesses to implement these changes over the next few months.

Speakers include Jasmine Lacis-Lee, Food Safety Manager – Microbiology and Allergens at BVAQ QLD and John Chadderton, Acting Manager Investigations and Compliance at the Department of Health.

The training session will cover:

  • food allergens and intolerance
  • allergen labelling requirements
  • allergen management – key concepts
  • introduction of new product lines
  • “Free From” claims
  • validation of labelling claims
  • resources
  • mandatory anaphylactic notifications.

Allergic reactions can be life-threatening and are reportable under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2009. This training helps businesses understand the importance of food allergen management and compliance with the Food Act 1984. We are providing this training to support businesses and to highlight their role in public health and safety.

Food business owners and quality assurance managers are invited to register for the online training session between 2pm – 4pm on Thursday 11 November.  Registrations close 5pm on 8 November.

For more information, contact City of Greater Dandenong Environmental Health Officer Sandra Macleod on 8571 1342 or email Sandra.Macleod@cgd.vic.gov.au.
