- Playspace makeover for Tim Neville Arboretum
The playspace at Tim Neville Arboretum in Ferntree Gully is being upgraded and will soon include a combination of renovated and brand-new equipment for all children to explore and enjoy.
The Arboretum on Dorset Road was originally an apple orchard owned by a local family. It is now a large multi-purpose reserve and a popular destination for recreation and relaxation. It has many features such as a lake and wetlands, war memorial, a gazebo and amphitheater, BBQ and picnic areas, gardens, and more.
Based on the findings from routine assessments, the playspace, located on the west side of the reserve, was identified as being due for renewal. Community feedback about what people loved about the existing play area and how it could be improved for future use was sought and helped us develop a revised design.
Construction of the new playspace starts mid-April with completion due at the end of July, subject to good weather conditions.
The existing castle and dragon design theme will be enhanced and include fun new features such as:
- a new drawbridge
- a dragon-themed water play area
- a new sandpit with water play
- a large, wide slide
- a 'quad bay' swing set
To support safe play during warmer weather, shade sails will be installed over the sandpit and water play areas and additional trees will be planted in and around the playspace providing natural shade. Pathways will also be upgraded to improve access.
Popular equipment such as the climbing net, flying fox, castle fort, and spinners will remain but renovated or relocated within the play area.
During construction, the current playspace will be closed however, visitors can still access and enjoy the reserve with all other areas remaining open, including the public toilets. Temporary changes to parking will occur with a few spaces at the Dorset Road car park being utilised to house site materials and safety facilities. The parking area at Francis Crescent will not be affected.
The upgrade is part of Council’s 2023 – 2024 Capital Works Program.
We are excited to see the playspace transform over the coming months and look forward to sharing with the community when it is complete and ready to be explored. Stay tuned for updates.
