- Careers on show
Australia’s largest candle producer, widely known for its soaps and diffusers, will be among businesses providing advice at an upcoming Knox Youth Career Expo.
Tilley Soaps in Bayswater was established 157 years ago and today has an annual turnover approaching $40 million. It employs about 150 people.
Managing Director Patrick Arundel says the manufacturing facility provides numerous job opportunities for young people.
“Getting a job, whether you’ve come through uni or didn’t make it to uni, is quite a struggle,” he says.
“In a workplace, new starters can find people of similar feelings, age and experiences and that can give them strength that they’re not on their own. That can result in workers becoming buddies and sharing experiences, and maybe even accommodation, as life goes on.
“But that first step is finding that place to go, somewhere between nine and five, that replaces school.”
Tilley Soaps has opportunities for process workers, warehouse pick and packers, and staff in administration, customer service, accounts and product development.
It has a partnership with Monash University to give science undergraduates work in its laboratory.
“We’re always looking to get people involved in the business and then see where their skills take them,” Patrick says.
“I would encourage as many students – and maybe they need the urging of their parents – to get to the expo and find out the things that they want to know and ask as many questions as they like.”
The expo is being held in partnership between Knox Council and Outer Eastern Local Learning Employment Network.
The focus of the expo is providing career pathways and advice for Knox residents aged 15-25.
There will be a panel of industry speakers, stalls for information on career services and training organisations, and break-out rooms where attendees can hear about topics such as seeking an apprenticeship and preparing for an interview.
