Supporting Councillors

Council is reviewing support provided to Councillors to ensure they have the resources they need to perform their roles effectively. Community feedback closes on 30 November 2025.

The Councillor Expenses and Support Policy is a requirement under the Local Government Act 2020. It provides direction on Councillor entitlements, including professional development and reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses.

Your feedback is invited on the draft policy to ensure it meets community expectations.

A key change being proposed is supporting a fresh format for ward meetings named ‘Councillor Listening Posts’. This initiative aims to support enhanced engagement between Councillors and the community.

Providing Councillors with support for listening posts helps them offer community members other opportunities to raise issues directly with Councillors to help inform their decision making.

Other proposed changes include:

  • introducing printing allowances
  • introducing a uniform allowance for each Councillor
  • revising guidelines for professional development, seminars and conferences
