- Recycle your soft plastics at selected supermarkets
Residents in Knox now have more ways to recycle, with selected supermarkets offering collection points for soft plastic items. This will help reduce the amount of waste going into household rubbish bins and ending up in landfill, contributing to a cleaner, greener Knox.
Soft plastics disposal is available at the following Woolworths stores:
- Bayswater, 659 Mountain Hwy
- Boronia, 127 Boronia Road
- Ferntree Gully, Cnr Burwood Hwy & Brenock Park Drive
- Knox, 425 Burwood Hwy
- Scoresby, 1385 Ferntree Gully Road
This method of disposal offers a practical, environmentally friendly alternative to placing soft plastics in your red-lidded rubbish bin, where they will end up in landfill. Soft plastics also cannot be placed in blue-lidded household recycling bins as they may cause damage to machinery at the recycling facility.
A soft plastic is any type of plastic that you can scrunch into a ball and doesn’t bounce back into its original shape. Examples of common soft plastics include biscuit wrappers, plastic bags, rubbish bags, chip packets, and salad mix packets.
Unsure if the item you have is a soft plastic? Do the scrunch test!
- Scrunch the plastic in your hand.
- If it bounces back, it’s not soft plastic. Put this in your rubbish bin.
- If it stays scrunched, it’s a soft plastic.
One easy way to manage and prepare your soft plastics for recycling is to keep an empty bread bag or plastic shopping bag in your kitchen or pantry. Use it to collect soft plastics as you go. Once the bag is full, simply take it with you on your next trip to the supermarket and drop it off at the designated collection point in-store.
Small habits such as these can make a big difference. Start today by collecting your soft plastics and dropping them off at your preferred supermarket.
