Help shape a safer walking and cycling route through Ferntree Gully

We are exploring the best way to complete the missing link in the Ringwood to Belgrave Railway Trail at Alpine Street and Station Street in Ferntree Gully for pedestrians and cyclists. Share your feedback, including which proposed route option you prefer by Tuesday 16 December.

The Ringwood to Belgrave Railway Trail is a popular shared walking and cycling route across Knox, Maroondah, and Yarra Ranges spanning 17 kms. Currently, there is a gap in the trail at Ferntree Gully Station, near Alpine Street and Station Street. We have heard from the community that the missing link is a safety concern, and it can be difficult to identify how to move through the area to rejoin the trail. So, we’re looking at ways to connect the trail.

Fixing the link will improve safety and accessibility and, provide an uninterrupted pedestrian and cycling route through Ferntree Gully.

We have developed 3 route options for your consideration.

Map of proposed route options - Ringwood to Belgrave trail, Ferntree Gully

Option 1 (Blue)

This option proposes a new off-road shared path between Lane Road and Alpine Street, on the west side of the station. It would be completely separated from traffic, offer the easiest access to the station and bike parking, but is likely the most expensive to build. Also, the street lighting on this side of the station is limited which could create safety concerns.

Option 2 (Orange)

This option offers the most direct route, running through the train station car park and behind Wattle Hall on the east side. It would be mainly on-road, shared with vehicles and require the removal of approximately six car spaces from the middle of the car park. Changes to traffic flow and vegetation in the area would also need to be made.

Option 3 (Purple)

This option follows the nature strip around the car park on the east side, be mainly off-road and separated from vehicles. This route benefits from good lighting due to nearby streetlights but, it does not offer the most direct path. To build this option, we would need to make changes to the carpark to make space for the new path. We would need to narrow the aisle of the east side of carpark and make it one-way. It is also possible that we may need to remove some informal parking spaces.

Have your say on how you use the trail, how you think it can make it safer and, which design option you prefer and why.
