Building a greener Knox with eco-friendly asphalt

Have you noticed improved roads, car parks or paths in your neighbourhood lately? Chances are they’ve been resurfaced with an environmentally friendly type of asphalt made from recycled materials.

By using asphalt that contains recycled materials, we’re reducing waste sent to landfill and lowering our environmental footprint, making our local infrastructure greener and more sustainable.

Here at Knox, we are sourcing this asphalt from local manufacturers. It contains the usual mix of sand and stone but has the added benefit of including recycled materials such as plastics and glass beads. All components are bound together with bitumen (similar to cement in concrete) to form a strong, long-lasting asphalt pavement road surface.

In 2024 to 2025, we used 10,850 tonnes of this eco-friendly asphalt to improve infrastructure in Knox. Recent road resurfacing projects include several local streets including Milpera Crescent and The Mews Wantirna (approx. 3,700m2) where it was used as part of our road renewal program.

Our teams have been using this material for approximately five years with the first trial taking place in January 2020 on Fraser Crescent, Wantirna South. Current observations suggest it is performing in line with conventional asphalt products.

Upcoming works using this environmentally friendly product include Dorrigo Drive, Boronia, Leonard Street, Bayswater and Wicks Road, The Basin.

We look forward to delivering more projects using this asphalt and investing in other recycled materials to deliver sustainable infrastructure and build a “greener” Knox.
