Respect is: Preventing violence against women and girls

Violence against women and girls, including family violence, is a serious and widespread problem in Australia. It can happen to anyone in our community, no matter their age, gender, income or cultural status.

Family Violence can take many forms including:

  • Physical or sexual abuse

  • Controlling behaviour such as limiting access to family and friends

  • Limiting or restricting access to money

  • Psychological and emotional abuse

  • Using text message, email, social media or a tracking a device to threaten or control; and

  • Travel visa abuse.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can all play a role in preventing family violence.

Each year, Knox City Council takes part in 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, recognised globally every year from 25 November to 10 December, where communities around the world join the call to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

In recognition of 16 Days of Activism, Council is hosting a webinar, Respect Is: Supporting Young People to Build Healthy Relationships, on Wednesday 26 November 7:30 pm - 9 pm. Parents and carers of young people aged 8-14 (approx.) are invited to this free webinar which will explore how to have important and open conversations about respect and wellbeing.

Help and support is available if you or someone you know is experiencing family violence. Visit www.knox.vic.gov.au/familyviolencesupport

If you are in immediate danger, call 000.
