Satisfaction with waste services remains high

In November and December 2025, we asked you to share your thoughts on household waste services. This was to help us understand how to provide an affordable service that meets everyone’s needs and reduces how much waste going to landfill.

We spoke to a representative sample of 502 households through randomly selected door to door interviews. A self-selected online survey through our Have Your Say website captured the views of a further 306 residents.

The community shared:

  • Overall, satisfaction with existing waste services – including rubbish, recycling, and food and garden - remains at excellent levels among the representative random sample, with improvements compared to previous Community Satisfaction Surveys. The self-selected online respondents had a lower satisfaction with fortnightly rubbish collection.
  • When comparing options for rubbish collection frequency, a clear majority (73%) of representative random sample preferred retaining the current fortnightly collection, with this option being preferred by half (50%) of the self-selected online respondents.
  • Awareness of bin upgrade options and special consideration programs was moderate, and awareness of the environmental and financial benefits achieved through the changes in recent years was low.
  • Cost, convenience, and impacts to our environment are important and you want us to continue considering these when planning and delivering waste services.

The results were noted by Council at their meeting on Monday 23 March. Council considered your feedback, as well as service usage data and industry standards and will undertake a number of actions:

  • Promoting bin upgrade options or special consideration programs to help those with extra waste needs.
  • Providing more general and practical advice on how to manage household waste including reducing bin odours.
  • Undertaking further investigation into capping hard waste to 3 cubic meters per collection when reviewing the next hard waste collection contract. Findings will be reported back to the Council at a later date.
  • Undertaking further investigation into reducing or removing bundled green waste from the current fortnightly collection schedule when reviewing the next bundled green waste collection contract. Findings will be reported back to Council at a later date.
  • Increasing community awareness of waste related environmental and financial achievements in Knox.

At this meeting Council also received a report on the plans for a future glass-only collection service in Knox. We will continue to advocate to the state government to reconsider other more cost-effective options for collection of glass products including expansion of the container deposit scheme.
