My School Lunch by Carla Gottgens and Knox over 65s

Image
Overhead view of a wooden desk arranged like a still life. On the left, a piece of cheese and a cut wedge rest on crinkled paper beside a small round container, a set of metal dividers, and a compact notebook. On the right, an open book lies next to a wrapped white item, with the warm tones and grain of the wood surface clearly visible.

My School Lunch brings together stories and memories from the Over 65s community of Knox. The stories are depicted through artworks in mixed media, clay, illustration and painting.

For many primary school students in the 1950s and 60s, lunch might have been jam, salmon paste or simply butter on bread. For others, even a simple sandwich was something to long for.

From England to China, regional Victoria to Ferntree Gully, these works share memories of belonging, feeling like an outsider and the comfort of family. What began as an art workshop soon became a place for storytelling, connection and reflection. It reminds us how something as simple as a school lunch can hold a lifetime of memories.

Knox City Council’s Positive and Healthy Ageing team delivered this project to tackle social isolation and loneliness among older residents across the community and to share their stories.
