Dispose of fallen leaves responsibly

This time of year creates beautiful changes to our local trees, but it can also leave many of us wondering what to do with the growing piles of fallen leaves in and around our gardens.

Follow these simple, practical, environmentally friendly steps to help manage leaf disposal and help keep your garden neat and tidy whilst still being kind to the environment:

  • Place materials in lime-green compostable bags labelled with the seedling symbol and code AS4736. Place the filled bag into your green food and garden bin. This will help both the bag and contents to be recycled into other materials. Bags large enough to hold garden waste are available from most hardware stores.
  • Alternatively, leaves can also be placed directly in your green food and garden bin, without using compostable bags
  • Leaves can be added to a home composting system. The system will help to turn the leave into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to nourish other plants and trees.

It can be tempting to reach for a plastic bag to collect extra leaves from your garden and place the bag either in your green food and garden bin or red rubbish bin. Unfortunately, when garden waste is placed in standard plastic bags, both the bag and the organic material inside cannot be recycled and must be sent to landfill. This is because processing facilities cannot separate plastic from organic waste.

We also discourage leaves from being raked or blown into our streets as this can block drains.

Dispose of leaves responsibly and contribute to a cleaner, greener and healthier Knox.
