Advancing reconciliation in Knox

In 2023, Knox City Council made a formal commitment to take meaningful actions to advance reconciliation in Knox with our first Reconciliation Action Plan.

Our first Reconciliation Action Plan 2023-2025 was developed with the local First Nations community and Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong Elders.

Key actions we have achieved to date include:

  • increasing First Nations information, celebration and Acknowledgement of Country through signage and artworks.
  • working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO) to increase their presence in Knox to deliver health, wellbeing, cultural and housing programs and services located in Knox.
  • conducting over thirty cultural education training experiences for the community and Council staff.  
  • leading and participating in inter-Council forums focusing on cultural safety and Aboriginal employment, procurement and economic development for Knox.
  • embedding Care of Country and protection of heritage in management practice.  
  • supporting Truth Telling, healing and ceremony through the increased attendance and profile of our Sorry Day ceremony.

It’s now time for us to develop our next Reconciliation Action Plan for 2026 – 2028 and we are seeking input from the local First Nations community and traditional owners.
