Safer speeds for Napoleon Road

We are proposing to the state government to change the speed limit on Napoleon Road, south of Kelletts Road through to Wellington Road, to 70km/h and introduce 40km/h school zones at the two crossings on school days between 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm. A decision is expected later this year or early 2027.

The current speed limit along this section of road is 80km/h. Pedestrians and cyclists face life-threatening injury if struck by vehicles traveling at this speed. The change aims to reduce risks for everyone using or crossing this road.

The proposal incorporates community feedback received during August and September 2025, where residents were invited to share their views on lowering the speed limit on this section of road to 60 km/h and introducing 40km/h time-based school zones at the crossings.

Concerns regarding longer travel times were raised, with others noting that cars do not slow down at crossings, increasing the risk of accidents and fatal injuries. All views were carefully considered.

In response to the feedback received, the original proposal was updated to recommend a speed limit of 70 km/h instead of 60 km/h. This is consistent with other roads in the area. The lower speed limits proposed add just 50 seconds to journeys during school times (8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm) or around 12 seconds at other times of the day — but they could save a life. The revised proposal aims to balance community concerns with the need to improve safety.

We have submitted the proposal to the Department of Transport and Planning and are awaiting a response on whether our proposed speed limit changes will be implemented. An outcome is expected at the end of his year or early 2027. If approved, the new speed limits should be introduced late 2027.

This proposed speed reduction has been brought about by community support for improved road safety. The most recent change being a speed reduction on Wellington Road from 80 km/h to 70 km/h in both directions, effective from June 2025.
